MALBORK CASTLE is a masterpiece of defensive and residential architecture of the late Middle Ages. The largest Gothic castle in the world, with an area of approximately 21 hectares and the total volume of buildings exceeding two hundred fifty thousand cubic meters, considered the largest brick structure built by human hands. Malbork was built in stages from early 70s of the 13th century, becoming a fundamental element of a system of strongholds of the Teutonic Prussia. Initially (since 1280) it had served as one of commander castles. In 1309, it became the seat of the Great Masters of the Order.

Extensively extended in the fourteenth century it took the form of three-part defense landscaping with clearly isolated High Castle (monastery), Middle Castle (the seat of the Grand Master and the Grand Commander, political and administrative centre of the monastic state) and the Fore-castle (the vast economic base). As the capital of the state of the Order of the Hospital of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the German House of Jerusalem, the castle became the main diplomatic, military, economic, and religious centre. Until the first half of the 15th century, Malbork was known throughout the continent as one of the two main bases of the Crusades to Lithuania and Samogitia and a place of spectacular games, feasts and tournaments, which attracted to the Prussia knights from many countries in Europe.
